NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
Dear Readers:
Normally the off-price retail segment is a drama-free zone. Quarter after quarter, the three major players — TJX Cos., Ross and Burlington — collectively rack up sales and steal market share from department stores and other mainstream retailers.
But in Q2, this dynamic changed, at least to some extent. It looks like Ross, which has been upping its game and revamping its stores, has taken market share from one of its rivals in the space, namely, TJX’s U.S.-based Marmaxx division, which runs T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and Sierra stores.
Some analysts foresaw this earlier this year, and we wrote about it then; you can find that story here. The interesting piece here is why. Some analysts say it has to do with pricing strategies and what U.S. consumers are looking for from retailers right now.
To understand more fully what is happening in off price, read Thursday’s story on TJX and the further developments made clear in Friday’s story on Ross. You can also find both stories in today’s edition.
And thanks, as always, for reading!
